Abstract: Divination is one of the most universal and enduring cultural phenomena in human civilization, with manifestations across all historical periods and cultural regions. However, neither traditional symbolic interpretations, psychological projection theories, cultural-anthropological functional explanations, nor scientistic dismissals have provided a mechanistic explanation of "why divination works." Based on the Yuanling Theory framework, this paper offers a comprehensive mechanistic interpretation of divinatory prediction. It proposes that divinatory prediction methods can be classified into five major types according to their operational mechanisms: Real-time Information Access Type (Yijing divination, Liuren, lots, Tarot, oracle bone divination, character divination, and miscellaneous divination), Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type (name divination and certain forms of astrological fate-calculation), State Externalization Type (physiognomic divination and Feng Shui), Initial Condition Type (Taiyi, natal chart analysis, and Bazi fate-calculation), and Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type (folk omens and certain forms of sign divination). Each type operates according to its own distinct mechanistic principles. This paper argues that divinatory prediction is not superstition, but rather a collective term for multiple cognitive techniques grounded in different mechanisms within the Xuanxue paradigm, and its mechanistic interpretation offers new theoretical perspectives for consciousness studies, cognitive science, and cross-cultural understanding.

1. Introduction

1.1 The Universality and Persistence of Divinatory Prediction

Divinatory prediction is one of the most universal and enduring cultural phenomena in human civilization. From ancient oracle bone cracking and yarrow-stalk divination, through medieval Tarot readings and astrological calculations, to contemporary lottery-style oracle draws and online divination, divination has permeated the entirety of human civilization in various forms. It transcends geographical, ethnic, religious, and temporal boundaries, constituting a nearly ubiquitous cultural practice.

Yet it is precisely this universality and persistence that poses a perplexing theoretical challenge: why has divination persisted? Why has it been repeatedly practiced across such diverse cultural contexts? More fundamentally, why does divination “work”?

1.2 Limitations of Existing Interpretive Paradigms

Existing interpretations of divination can be roughly grouped into five categories, each of which exhibits fundamental explanatory gaps:

(1) Xuanxue/Symbolic-Image School Interpretations

Interpretations within traditional Yijing studies and various divinatory systems typically hold that there exists some form of “symbolic correspondence” or “analogical correlation” between hexagrams, card images, astrological charts, and worldly affairs. For instance, the Yi Zhuan (Commentary on the I Ching) states that hexagrams “serve to communicate the virtues of the numinous and to categorize the conditions of all things.” The strength of such interpretations lies in their fidelity to divinatory practice itself; however, they describe “how to operate” and “how to interpret,” rather than explaining “why operation is possible.” They presuppose a correspondence between symbols and phenomena without specifying the ontological foundation of such correspondence.

(2) Psychological School Interpretations

Psychology attributes the efficacy of divination to mechanisms such as psychological projection, self-validation, the universal applicability of vague statements, and placebo effects. The strength of these interpretations lies in their illumination of the psychological factors involved in divinatory experience. Their fundamental limitation, however, is that they explain “why people believe in divination” without explaining “why divination is sometimes accurate.” They shift the question from “whether divination works” to “why people believe it works,” thereby evading the core problem.

(3) Cultural-Anthropological School Interpretations

Cultural anthropology treats divination as a social regulatory mechanism, cultural narrative system, or “interpretive framework.” For example, divination serves functions such as decision-making aid, social integration, and anxiety reduction in societies characterized by high uncertainty. The strength of these interpretations lies in their elucidation of divination’s role within social structures. Their limitation, however, is that they answer “what divination does in society” rather than “what divination’s cognitive mechanism is.”

(4) Scientistic School Interpretations

The scientistic position directly dismisses divination as “superstition,” “pseudoscience,” or a “vestige of irrationality.” The fundamental problem with this stance is that it denies phenomena on the grounds that “current science cannot explain them,” rather than attempting to expand the explanatory framework to accommodate them. This constitutes a methodological self-limitation—using the boundaries of a tool to deny the existence of its object.

(5) Folk-Practice School Interpretations

Folk traditions treat divination as a body of experiential techniques passed down through generations—practice without theory, know-how without know-why. Practices such as lot-drawing, divination, and physiognomy are widely disseminated in folk contexts, yet practitioners are typically unable to articulate the principles behind them, offering explanations such as “handed down by the masters” or “it works because it works.” Such interpretations possess operation without theory and experience without mechanism.

1.3 The Object and Method of This Study

While each of the above five interpretive approaches has its own emphasis, they share a common deep deficiency: they all lack a theoretical framework connecting individual intention to the manifestation of results. Without such a framework, divination can only be described as “mysterious,” “psychological,” “functional,” “superstitious,” or “experiential,” and cannot be understood as a mechanistically describable cognitive activity.

This paper provides a systematic mechanistic interpretation of divinatory prediction phenomena based on Yuanling Theory—a theoretical framework that establishes consciousness as an independent ontological subject. The object of this study encompasses five major categories: Real-time Information Access Type, Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type, State Externalization Type, Initial Condition Type, and Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type. This paper will explicate the core mechanism of each type in turn, reveal its operational principles, and on this basis discuss the effectiveness, limitations, and ethical boundaries of divinatory prediction.

This paper advances a core thesis: divinatory prediction is not superstition, but rather a collective term for multiple cognitive techniques grounded in different mechanisms within the Xuanxue paradigm. Different types of divinatory prediction methods follow different operational principles, yet all can be mechanistically interpreted within the Yuanling Theory framework.

2. The Core Conceptual Framework of Yuanling Theory

Before proceeding to the mechanistic interpretation of divinatory prediction, it is necessary to briefly review the core framework of Yuanling Theory. This chapter outlines several core concepts directly relevant to divinatory mechanisms, serving as the theoretical foundation for the mechanistic explications in subsequent chapters.

2.1 Non-Spatiotemporal Background and the Cosmic Information Network

Yuanling Theory proposes that the essence of the cosmos is not a mere collection of matter, but a dynamic “energy-informational relational network.” All matter, space-time, and physical laws are stable patterns and structures manifested by this network at specific dimensions and scales. Within this framework, space-time—time as the lawful sequential structure of praxis, space as the relational field of praxis—is not an independent absolute container, but a manifestational pattern differentiated from a more fundamental state of existence.

Yuanling Theory terms this more fundamental state of existence the “Non-Spatiotemporal Background.” It is neither “non-existent” nor “outside space-time,” but rather a holographic potential matrix that precedes and contains the differentiated state of linear space-time. Within this matrix, all possibilities, informational correlations, and forms of existence reside in an undivided, unmanifested state of interwoven fusion. The spatiotemporal framework is precisely the stable manifestational pattern differentiated from this matrix.

The core implication of this understanding is that information is non-local at the Non-Spatiotemporal level. Information divided into “past,” “present,” and “future” within linear space-time coexists in holographically correlated form within the Non-Spatiotemporal background. This means that consciousness can, under specific conditions, bypass the informational access constraints of linear space-time and directly access informational correlations at the Non-Spatiotemporal level.

2.2 Cosmic Mapping and the Unique Node

Building upon the Non-Spatiotemporal framework, Yuanling Theory further proposes the concept of “Cosmic Mapping”: every Yuanling (the ontological subject of individual consciousness) is a “Unique Node” within the cosmic information network. There exists a holographic, isomorphic mapping relationship between each Yuanling’s internal structure and the cosmic information network as a whole.

This understanding provides the ontological foundation for divination: divination is not “channeling,” but rather the conscious node’s informational access to, reading of, or state-projection onto the cosmic information network.

2.3 Core Attributes of Yuanling

Yuanling possesses a series of inherent fundamental attributes, three of which are directly relevant to divinatory mechanisms:

(1) Transcendent Perception

Transcendent Perception is a core functional attribute of Yuanling. It refers to Yuanling’s capacity to directly receive and interpret subtle information far beyond the spectrum of conventional biological senses—from its own structure, from other Yuanling fields, and from the cosmic background information field. This is the natural capacity of Yuanling as a “node” within the cosmic energy-informational network.

Under normal conditions, this perception is submerged by the “noise” of biological interfaces—ordinary thoughts and sensory stimuli. However, when the signal-to-noise ratio of the interface increases (during states of intense concentration, deep relaxation, or intuitive receptivity), it can manifest as intuition, premonition, or cognition beyond the five senses.

(2) Cultural Interfacing

Cultural Interfacing is a necessary operational attribute of Yuanling in transcendent perception and expression. It refers to the fact that when perceiving, interpreting, and presenting transcendent information, Yuanling must and instinctively rely on the specific cultural symbol system or interaction protocol of its community as a “codec.”

When Transcendent Perception receives complex energy-informational patterns that cannot be directly expressed in ordinary language, Yuanling must “translate” them into comprehensible inner images or narratives. At this point, the most deeply embedded cultural symbolic templates in individual and collective unconsciousness are activated, becoming the framework for organizing this information.

(3) Will Intensity

Will Intensity refers to the active shaping and orienting role that Yuanling’s structured, directed intention plays in interaction, as a highly ordered energy-informational vector. The degree of focus, clarity, and persistence of Yuanling’s will directly determines its capacity to penetrate interference, influence the local energy-informational field, and mobilize resources toward its aim.

2.4 Consciousness DNA and Interactive Evolvability

Consciousness DNA is the deep informational coding structure that determines each Yuanling’s absolute uniqueness and fundamental evolutionary direction. It governs Yuanling’s dynamic generation and is continuously enriched and reshaped throughout the life course through “Interactive Evolvability.” Every choice and every action taken by the individual in the course of life constitutes a rewriting and optimization of Consciousness DNA. This concept provides the mechanistic foundation for understanding the dialectical relationship between Ming and Yun .

3. A Unified Mechanistic Framework for Divinatory Prediction Methods

This chapter classifies divinatory prediction methods and establishes a unified mechanistic framework, providing the structural foundation for the specific interpretations in subsequent chapters.

3.2 Applicability Boundaries and Interrelationships Among Types

The distinctions among types are not differences of “true/false” or “high/low,” but differences of mechanism. Some divinatory methods may involve hybrid mechanisms (for example, Qimen Dunjia possesses dual attributes of both information access and Initial Condition deduction), but their dominant mechanism can usually be clearly assigned to one type.

The applicability boundaries of each type are determined by the information sources and processing methods they rely on:

Real-time Information Access Type: Suitable for information queries concerning specific current issues; emphasizes “the first reading prevails.”

Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type: Suitable for personality analysis and trend assessment based on static information.

State Externalization Type: Suitable for diagnosis and perception of the individual’s current energetic state.

Initial Condition Type: Suitable for life-path deduction based on initial condition settings; emphasizes the dialectic of Ming-Yun.

Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type: Suitable for experiential judgments concerning everyday matters; relies on historical statistical correlations.

4. Mechanistic Interpretation of Each Type of Divinatory Prediction Method

4.1 Real-time Information Access Type: Random Coupling and Information Access

Core Mechanism:

The core mechanism of Real-time Information Access divination is: the inquirer activates Will Intensity through intentional focusing, achieving non-directed coupling between Yuanling and the cosmic information network through random events (casting lots, drawing lots, shuffling cards, calling out characters, etc.), with the received subtle information then compiled into an interpretable symbolic system via Cultural Interfacing.

The key links of this mechanism include:

Intentional Focusing: The inquirer’s clear intention activates Will Intensity, establishing a directed channel for information query.

Random Coupling: The random operation (coin tossing, lots drawing, card shuffling, etc.) eliminates interference from conscious bias, allowing the sampling to directly access the Yuanling’s energy-informational structure.

Information Reception: Transcendent Perception is instantaneously activated, receiving energy-informational signals from the cosmic information network.

Symbolic Compilation: Cultural Interfacing “translates” the received raw information into a comprehensible symbolic system.

Meaning Interpretation: The interpreter transforms the symbolic system into a narrative that fits the inquirer’s specific situation.

Mechanistic Basis for “The First Reading Prevails”:

Repeated divination on the same question within a short time frame contaminates the purity of the sampling due to the intrusion of conscious bias. Subsequent divinations are no longer non-directed couplings between the Yuanling and the cosmic information network, but distorted signals interfered with by the expectation of “wanting a different result.” Therefore, Real-time Information Access divination emphasizes that “the first reading prevails.”

This principle does not exclude “subsequent divination based on a new state”: when the individual’s energy-informational structure has changed through experience and decisions, a re-evaluation of the same question under the new state is valid. Each divination is an independent “round of dialogue.”

Methods Involved:

(1) Oracle Bone Divination

One of the oldest forms of divination in China. Cracking tortoise shells or animal bones by applying heat and observing the cracks to determine good or ill fortune. Its mechanism: the random physical event of heating triggers non-directed coupling between the Yuanling and the cosmic information network; the crack patterns serve as physical manifestations of energy-informational signals, compiled via Cultural Interfacing into interpretable symbolic signs.

(2) Yijing Divination (Yarrow Stalks / Coin Tossing)

A divinatory system based on the hexagrams of the I Ching (Book of Changes). Hexagrams are obtained through the division of yarrow stalks or the tossing of coins. The sixty-four hexagrams constitute a symbolic encoding system for cosmic energy-informational patterns—each hexagram corresponds to a fundamental energy-informational state pattern. The hexagram obtained is a “snapshot” of the Yuanling’s own energy structure at the present moment.

(3) Liuren

One of the three great classical Chinese divinatory arts (San Shi), operating by establishing a lesson based on the monthly general and the time of day. Its core mechanism: the randomness of the divination time triggers information access; the Twelve Heavenly Generals, Twelve Spirits, and Six Relatives constitute the symbolic system of Cultural Interfacing, with information interpreted through their generative and restrictive relationships. Liuren is classified under Real-time Information Access Type due to its reliance on the randomness of the divination time for information access.

(4) Lots (Chouqian)

Randomly drawing a lot to obtain a lot text (Qianwen). The lot text is essentially a culturally refined “high-frequency information compression package”—each lot text is a set of highly condensed archetypal images that, through long-term cultural sedimentation, have established stable mapping relationships with specific energy-informational patterns. “So-and-so divine lots” represent localized forms of Cultural Interfacing.

(5) Tarot

A deck of 78 cards consisting of 22 Major Arcana (archetypal forces) and 56 Minor Arcana (everyday situations). The random event of shuffling and drawing triggers information access; the combination of cards is the symbolic presentation of energy-informational patterns. The Major Arcana correspond to archetypal energy-informational states, while the Minor Arcana correspond to their specific manifestations in daily life.

(6) Character Divination (Cezì)

The inquirer spontaneously calls out one or more characters, and the diviner makes a comprehensive judgment based on them. The randomness of the character selection triggers coupling; the character’s form, meaning, and Five Phase attributes serve as the raw material for Cultural Interfacing translation. Though simple in method, its mechanism is consistent with Yijing divination and lots.

(7) Miscellaneous Divination (Partial)

Simplified random methods such as lots-drawing or moon-block throwing. Random events trigger information access, with an extremely simplified symbolic system (positive/negative, yin/yang, auspicious/inauspicious), but the mechanism is the same as the methods above, only with lower informational resolution.

4.2 Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type: Decoding Static Information

Core Mechanism:

Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration divination does not involve real-time information access, but rather performs structural reconfiguration and decoding of already-given static information (such as name, birth time, etc.). The output depends on the structure of the input information itself, rather than the inquirer’s current state. It does not require “sincerity invokes efficacy,” nor does it require random coupling.

Its mechanism can be summarized as: input static information → structural reconfiguration through established rules → output decoding results. This process is essentially a structural deduction based on symbolic systems, rather than information access.

Methods Involved:

(1) Name Divination (Cèmíng)

Structural reconfiguration and interpretation of a name’s stroke count, phonology, Five Phase attributes, and numerological patterns. The name is static information determined at birth, not changing with the inquirer’s current state. The output of name divination is a decoding of this static informational structure, rather than real-time information access.

Different name divination systems (such as the Five-Grid Profiling Method, Five Phase Nameology, etc.) are essentially different “decoding rules”—they perform structural reconfiguration on the same static information in different ways, yielding different interpretive results.

(2) Astrological Fate-Calculation (Partial)

Astrological fate-calculation methods based on birth time, such as Ziwei Doushu, possess dual attributes in mechanism. Their charting is based on static birth time information, belonging to Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type; however, the subsequent interpretation of the chart sometimes incorporates the inquirer’s current state, bringing it closer to State Externalization Type or Initial Condition Type. This paper classifies them under Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type, as their core mechanism remains the structural deduction of static information.

4.3 State Externalization Type: Reading Externalized Energy-Informational States

Core Mechanism:

The core mechanism of State Externalization divination is: the state of the individual Yuanling at the level of “Essence, Qi, and Spirit,” along with the distribution of energy under specific spatiotemporal conditions, is externalized through the body or environment. The diviner reads these externalized forms to infer the individual’s energy-informational state in reverse.

The key to this mechanism lies in the “externalization-reading” relationship:

Externalization: The individual’s energy-informational state necessarily leaves traces in the body (palm, face, bone structure) or environment (residence, grave, workplace).

Reading: The diviner, possessing perceptual acuity, can read these traces to infer the individual’s energy-informational state.

State Externalization divination is not “prediction,” but “reading”—reading the projection of the individual’s current energy-informational state. Therefore, palmistry, physiognomy, Feng Shui, etc., change with the individual’s state and are not static.

Methods Involved:

(1) Physiognomic Divination (Face, Palm, Bone)

Physical features serve as externalized projections of the individual Yuanling’s energy-informational state. Face reading reflects the overall state of “Essence, Qi, and Spirit”; palm reading reflects the specific expression of internal energy structure; bone reading reflects deeper life-energy structure.

The effectiveness of physiognomic divination depends on the reader’s perceptual acuity—the ability to accurately identify the characteristics of energy-informational states from external forms. The same face will present differently under different energetic states. Therefore, physiognomic divination is dynamic and state-dependent, rather than static fatalistic judgment.

(2) Feng Shui (Kan Yu)

The environmental energy field serves as a projection of the individual or collective Yuanling state. “The dwelling and the person are one—the dwelling is like its occupant”—the energy distribution of a residence, workplace, etc., is an external extension of the occupant’s or user’s Yuanling state.

The effectiveness of Feng Shui lies in reading the distribution and flow of the environmental energy field, thereby inferring the occupant’s or user’s energy-informational state. The energy state of the environment changes with the occupant’s state—when a person moves into a new residence, their energy state gradually shapes the energetic field of the living environment. The reverse is also true.

4.4 Initial Condition Type: Mapping and Deduction of Initial Coupling States

Core Mechanism:

The core mechanism of Initial Condition divination is: the energy-informational pattern mapped by the spatiotemporal coordinates of birth sets the state parameters for the individual Yuanling’s “initial coupling” with the cosmic information network. This initial parameter constitutes the “starting point” of the individual’s life praxis—what tradition calls Ming ().

Ming, as an initial condition, cannot be changed—it is the “energy-informational initial signature” acquired by the individual Yuanling at birth. However, Yun (), as the individual’s choices and actions in the course of life, can be changed. Sustained changes in Yun ultimately reshape the actual unfolding of Ming. “Ming cannot be changed; Yun can be changed; when Yun changes, Ming changes.”

In terms of Yuanling Theory: Ming is the basic inclination and potential capability spectrum of the individual Yuanling’s Consciousness DNA; Yun is the actual process by which the individual rewrites and optimizes Consciousness DNA through “Interactive Evolvability.” The initial condition sets the starting point and boundaries, while the evolutionary process determines the actual path within those boundaries.

Methods Involved:

(1) Taiyi

One of the three great classical Chinese divinatory arts (San Shi), deducing the rise and fall of national fortunes based on astronomical and calendrical calculations. Its mechanism: based on the stem-branch combination of the starting year (static initial condition), through structural deduction of the three factors—Heavenly Timing, Earthly Advantage, and Human Harmony—it reveals the energy-informational evolutionary trends of the social collective consciousness field. Taiyi is classified under Initial Condition Type.

(2) Astrological Divination (Natal Chart Analysis)

The natal chart, drawn based on the positions of celestial bodies at birth, records the energy-informational signature of the individual Yuanling’s initial coupling with the cosmic information network. Planets, signs, houses, etc., are symbolic expressions of this initial signature.

The effectiveness of natal chart analysis does not lie in “planets determining fate,” but in the resonance between the energy-informational patterns corresponding to celestial positions and the individual’s energy structure at initial coupling. The natal chart is a “map” of initial conditions, not a “script” of fate.

(3) Bazi Fate-Calculation (Eight Characters)

Natal chart deduction based on the stem-branch combinations of birth time. The core logic of Bazi fate-calculation is: the stem-branch combination at the moment of birth is a symbolic expression of the individual Yuanling’s initial coupling state. By analyzing the Five Phase generation and restriction relationships, Ten Spirits, etc., of the stem-branch combination, the basic trajectory of the individual’s life praxis can be deduced.

It should be noted that Bazi fate-calculation belongs to Initial Condition Type, not fatalism. What it deduces are possible paths based on initial conditions, not unchangeable inevitable destinies. Ming is the setting of initial parameters; Yun is the choice of actual path; and the choices of Yun ultimately feed back into the actual unfolding of Ming.

(4) Qimen Dunjia—A Hybrid Case

Qimen Dunjia, one of the three great classical Chinese divinatory arts (San Shi), operates by arranging a chart based on spatiotemporal directions, possessing dual mechanistic attributes:

Its chart-setting process depends on the spatiotemporal coordinates at the time of setting, enabling information access through the random triggering of the chart-setting moment (Real-time Information Access Type);

Its deduction process is based on initial conditions (chart-setting spatiotemporality) for complex structural deduction (Initial Condition Type).

Therefore, Qimen Dunjia is a hybrid of Real-time Information Access Type and Initial Condition Type. In practice, the randomness of chart-setting determines the quality of information sampling, while subsequent deduction deepens the interpretation of the sampling results.

(5) Date Selection (Zeji)

Selecting specific temporal nodes to obtain favorable initial conditions. Its core logic: different spatiotemporal nodes correspond to different energy-informational initial states; choosing superior initial conditions can establish a more favorable energetic foundation for subsequent activities. Date Selection is classified under Initial Condition Type.

4.5 Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type: Statistical Patterns of Experiential Correlations

Core Mechanism:

Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical divination does not rely on the individual Yuanling’s information access, structural reading, or state projection, but rather on statistical regularities derived from extensive historical experience and phenomenological observation. Its essence is a “phenomenon–outcome” correlation model, akin to a precursor of empirical statistics.

Its mechanism can be summarized as: observe phenomenon → consult historical experience → output judgment. This process does not involve interaction between consciousness and the cosmic information network, but depends on the accumulation of historical experience and the reliability of statistical correlations.

Methods Involved:

(1) Folk Omens

Empirical interpretations of everyday signs such as eyelid twitching, tinnitus, ear warmth, sneezing, magpie calls, etc. These phenomena have been endowed with specific meanings in different cultures (e.g., “left eye twitching brings wealth, right eye twitching brings disaster”). Their essence lies in the “phenomenon–outcome” statistical correlations formed through long-term experiential accumulation.

The effectiveness of folk omens depends on the richness of experiential accumulation and the reliability of statistical correlations. If a certain sign has been highly correlated with specific outcomes in extensive historical experience, then its judgment carries certain statistical significance.

(2) Sign Divination (Partial)

Sign divination (Xiangzhan) is a method of making judgments by observing natural phenomena (physical signs, celestial phenomena, etc.). Some forms of sign divination belong to Real-time Information Access Type (i.e., triggering information access through natural phenomena).

For example, certain abnormal animal behaviors are considered predictive of natural disasters such as earthquakes. Their validity lies in the animal’s own Transcendent Perception and associated responses. The essence of this type of sign divination is inference made by humans through observation of animal behavior, thus belonging to Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type.

It should be noted that the animal’s own Transcendent Perception belongs to Real-time Information Access Type, while the phenomenon–outcome correlation established by humans belongs to Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type. This paper classifies it under Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type from the cognitive perspective of the “human diviner.”

Table 3. Limitations of Divinatory Prediction

6. Ethical Boundaries and Philosophical Implications of Divinatory Prediction

6.1 The Positioning of Divinatory Prediction: Diagnosing the Present, Detecting Possibilities, Not Announcing Fate

Based on the mechanistic analysis throughout this paper, divinatory prediction is not a prophecy that “announces destiny,” but a technique of information access, structural interpretation, or state diagnosis based on different mechanisms. It enables the individual to make their own choices on the basis of a clearer understanding of their own state and possible paths.

6.2 Divinatory Prediction and Free Will: The Ming-Yun Dialectic

Different types of divinatory prediction position free will differently:

Real-time Information Access: Entirely dependent on the inquirer’s active intention; free will is a precondition.

Initial Condition: Ming sets the starting point; Yun determines the path; free will operates within Yun.

State Externalization: Reads the current state; free will can change the state.

Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration: Output based on static information; free will is reflected in how one understands and applies the interpretive results.

Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical: Based on historical statistics; free will is reflected in whether one acts upon the judgment.

6.3 Ethical Principles of Divinatory Prediction

Principle 1: Auxiliary cognition, not substitute for decision-making. Divination provides information and judgment; the ultimate decision-making authority lies with the individual.

Principle 2: The first reading prevails (applicable to Real-time Information Access Type). Repeated divination on the same question within a short time contaminates the purity of sampling; the first sampling prevails. Subsequent divination based on a new state is not subject to this limitation.

Principle 3: Not a substitute for professional advice. Divination excels at state diagnosis and possibility assessment; it does not provide professional solutions for medical, legal, or financial matters.

Principle 4: Not to be used for manipulating others. Divination is a technique of information access and interpretation, not an instrument of power.

Principle 5: Honesty and humility. The diviner should present interpretations truthfully and acknowledge their own limitations.

7. Conclusion

This paper has provided a systematic mechanistic interpretation of divinatory prediction phenomena based on the Yuanling Theory framework. Yuanling Theory establishes consciousness as an independent ontological subject, with the Non-Spatiotemporal Background and the Cosmic Information Network as its ontological foundation, providing the previously missing theoretical grounding for explaining “why divination works.” Within this framework, this paper has advanced a core judgment: divinatory prediction is not superstition, but a collective term for multiple cognitive techniques grounded in different mechanisms within the Xuanxue paradigm.

The core contribution of this paper lies in the construction of a mechanistic classification system for divinatory prediction methods. According to their operational mechanisms, divinatory prediction methods can be divided into five major types: Real-time Information Access Type (Yijing divination, Liuren, lots, Tarot, oracle bone divination, character divination, and miscellaneous divination), Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type (name divination and certain forms of astrological fate-calculation), State Externalization Type (physiognomic divination and Feng Shui), Initial Condition Type (Taiyi, natal chart analysis, and Bazi fate-calculation), and Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type (folk omens and certain forms of sign divination). Each type has its own distinct operational principles and applicability boundaries; its effectiveness depends on different sets of conditions; its limitations stem from the characteristics of its respective mechanism. This classification system breaks through the limitations of traditional interpretive paradigms, offering new theoretical perspectives and methodological frameworks for divinatory prediction research.

Within this framework, this paper has further elucidated the relationship between different types of divinatory prediction and free will. Real-time Information Access Type depends entirely on the inquirer’s active intention, with free will as its operational precondition. In Initial Condition Type, Ming as the initial condition cannot be changed, but Yun as the individual’s choices and actions in the course of life can be changed, and sustained changes in Yun ultimately reshape the actual unfolding of Ming. “Ming cannot be changed; Yun can be changed; when Yun changes, Ming changes” —this dialectical relationship receives a clear mechanistic explanation in Yuanling Theory: Ming is the basic inclination and potential capability spectrum of the individual’s Consciousness DNA; Yun is the actual process by which the individual rewrites Consciousness DNA through “Interactive Evolvability.” The initial condition sets the starting point and boundaries, while the evolutionary process determines the actual path within those boundaries. State Externalization Type reads the current state, and free will can change that state. In Fixed-Structure Reconfiguration Type and Empirical Phenomenological-Statistical Type, free will is reflected in how the individual understands and applies the interpretive results. Divinatory prediction does not announce fate, but enables the individual to make their own choices on the basis of diagnosing the present and detecting possibilities.

As a theoretical construction, the mechanistic classification in this paper is conceptual deduction based on the Yuanling Theory framework, requiring large-scale empirical testing; the boundaries between types may overlap or mix in actual practice, requiring further refinement; this paper’s interpretation is rooted in specific ontological presuppositions, and its persuasiveness may vary across different standpoints; moreover, this paper focuses on synchronic structural analysis, with limited attention to the historical evolution and cultural contexts of divinatory methods. Future research may further develop in directions such as in-depth empirical studies of each type, cross-cultural comparisons, dialogue with cognitive science, and exploration of application boundaries and ethical norms in modern society. The mechanistic interpretation of divinatory prediction phenomena, in turn, corroborates the explanatory power of Yuanling Theory—a theory capable of explaining divination necessarily touches upon certain fundamental features of the relationship between consciousness and the cosmos.
