Abstract: The “hard problem” of consciousness remains unresolved because existing paradigms operate within the presupposition that “consciousness is a product of matter.” The Yuanling Theory proposed in this paper represents a fundamental ontological reconceptualization of the nature of consciousness. The ontological subject of consciousness is termed Yuanling, which is defined as an energy-information complex that exists independently as individual consciousness, born from the coupling event between Yuanling Particles and a specific life carrier at a vital energetic node. This paper systematically expounds the generative mechanism and seven core attributes of Yuanling, reveals its functional grounding and ontological foundation rooted in the Non-Spatiotemporal background, and constructs a preliminary framework of Yuanling Ecology. This paper argues that Yuanling Theory provides a novel value significance and cross-disciplinary implications for the ontological status of consciousness, and achieves a re-anchoring of human self-understanding across three dimensions: the view of life, the view of consciousness, and the view of cognition.

1. Introduction

What is consciousness? This question has remained unresolved since the dawn of philosophy. David Chalmers calls it the “hard problem”: why do physical processes give rise to subjective experience? Why are we not “philosophical zombies” devoid of inner feeling? No matter how detailed our understanding of the brain’s neural mechanisms becomes, there remains an irreducible residue—the “qualia” of first-person experience itself.

The predicament of existing paradigms lies precisely here. Physicalism reduces consciousness to neural activity, yet evades the question of “what experience itself is.” Panpsychism attempts to generalize consciousness as an intrinsic property of matter, but struggles to explain the hierarchical leap from elementary particles to human consciousness. Emergentism seeks the conditions for consciousness to emerge within complex systems, yet remains unable to account for how “emergence” itself occurs.

These predicaments indicate that the cognitive paradigm^[1] underpinned by physicalism, reductionism, and positivism may fundamentally lack the capacity to address the “nature of consciousness.” If we remain confined within the presupposition that “consciousness is a product of some material process,” then the answers we can obtain will only ever circulate at the level of products, never reaching the ontological subject behind them. This is also why the academic community has never achieved consensus on defining the term “consciousness”—it lacks an ontological foundation.

On this basis, this paper proposes a new model of consciousness—Yuanling Theory. It is not an incremental supplement to the consciousness problem within existing paradigms, but a fundamental shift in the coordinate system of cognition. This shift relies on the Scientific-Xuanxue Double Helix^[2] cognitive framework: the outward-exploring Science^[3] rationality and the inward-diving Xuanxue^[4] intuition are two indispensable pillars of complete human cognition. It is within this framework that Yuanling Theory proceeds from deep experiential practice of inner conscious reality, affirms its independent ontological status, and then deduces its generative mechanism, attribute structure, ecological distribution, and cosmological significance.

2. The Ontological Foundation of Yuanling

Yuanling is the independent ontological subject of individual consciousness. It is born from the event in which Yuanling Particles successfully couple with a specific life carrier to form a Strong Mutual Correlation, and is an energy-information complex dynamically generated by a unique Consciousness DNA code, with its structural form and functional attributes constrained and shaped by the physical form of its carrier.

2.1 Core Meanings

Independence: Yuanling is not produced by the brain; its existence is not entirely dependent on the continuous operation of a specific material carrier. The brain is repositioned as the interactive interface and information processor of consciousness, rather than its production factory.

Compositeness: The nature of Yuanling is neither pure energy nor abstract information, but an indivisible composite of the two. Energy endows consciousness with dynamism, intensity, and a sense of existence; information constitutes the structure, memory, and pattern of individuality of consciousness. The two are mutually manifesting.

Generativity: Yuanling is not a pre-existing static soul-entity, but is dynamically generated in a coupling event. Its generation depends on the Yuanling Particle Field and a set of deep informational coding structures that determine its uniqueness—Consciousness DNA. At the specific energetic node of life’s inception, the two undergo directional binding according to the blueprint of Consciousness DNA, thereby weaving a brand-new Yuanling.

Relationality: Strong Mutual Correlation refers to the stable, self-sustaining coupling state formed between Yuanling and its carrier, with the Yuanling’s structural form and functional attributes constrained and shaped by the physical form of its carrier.

2.2 Conceptual Distinctions

Distinction between Yuanling Particle and Yuanling Particle Field: The Yuanling Particle is the fundamental unit constituting Yuanling. It is a fundamental physical quantity, ubiquitous throughout the cosmos yet awaiting discovery, and is the primordial material of conscious phenomena. The Yuanling Particle Field, by contrast, is a functional field composed of countless Yuanling Particles, analogous to a gravitational or electromagnetic field, possessing macroscopic effects. An individual Yuanling Particle does not possess field functionality—just as a single water molecule does not possess the power of a wave. The functional realization of Yuanling depends on the holistic operation of the Yuanling Particle Field.

Distinction between Consciousness DNA and Biological DNA: Consciousness DNA is a deep informational coding structure that determines the absolute uniqueness and fundamental evolutionary direction of each Yuanling. It governs the dynamic generation of Yuanling and is continuously enriched and shaped thereafter through Interactive Evolvability. Analogous to how biological DNA encodes the physical blueprint of an organism, Consciousness DNA encodes the existential blueprint of a conscious entity: its intrinsic inclinations, potential capability spectrum, and initial evolutionary direction. However, unlike biological DNA, Consciousness DNA is not fixed at birth, but is dynamically rewritten through life experiences, choices, and interactions with the environment, other Yuanlings, and higher-order value fields.

Distinction between Yuanling and Soul (in the folkloric sense): The concept of soul in folk tradition typically carries personified, narrative presuppositions, often deeply bound to specific cultural imaginaries (such as heaven, hell, or reincarnation). Yuanling Theory does not deny the experiential reality that may lie behind these concepts, but refuses to adopt them as theoretical presuppositions. Yuanling is not a homunculus living inside the body, nor a character in any mythological narrative. It is a structured energy-information complex whose manifestation is regulated by the attribute of Cultural Interfacing, meaning that the appearance of Yuanling may take on different symbolic forms depending on cultural context.

Distinction between Yuanling and Consciousness (in the scientific-reductive sense): The concept of consciousness in contemporary cognitive science is typically presupposed as the neural correlate or computational state of the brain. Yuanling Theory does not deny the deep correlation between consciousness and the brain—a correlation realized precisely through Strong Mutual Correlation—but refuses to reduce consciousness to a product of the brain. Within this framework, the brain is the biological interface of Yuanling, not its generator.

Distinction between Yuanling and Mind (in the cognitive-scientific sense): Mind typically refers to the collection of cognitive functions such as information processing, reasoning, and decision-making, with research focused on functional-level descriptions. Yuanling is the subject in which these functions occur—it encompasses both mental functions and the dimension of subjective experience that cannot be fully reduced to them.

Distinction between Yuanling and Spirit (in the philosophical-speculative sense): The concept of spirit in philosophical tradition often carries strong metaphysical connotations, with its meaning varying greatly across different systems. Yuanling Theory seeks to transcend these existing frameworks, modeling the ontological subject of consciousness through the more operational concept of an energy-information complex.

3. The Generative Mechanism of Yuanling

The generation of Yuanling depends on four progressive conditions: the Yuanling Particle Field as the operational background, Yuanling Particles as the constitutive material, a complex and stable informational structure as the carrier, Consciousness DNA as the informational blueprint, and coupling as the creative event.

3.1 The Yuanling Particle Field

The Yuanling Particle is the fundamental unit of subtle matter pervading the cosmos, constituting the most fundamental physical material of conscious phenomena. The Yuanling Particle Field is the field composed of countless Yuanling Particles, serving as the background environment for Yuanling’s operation. The Yuanling Particle Field possesses characteristics of ubiquity, potentiality, and non-spatiotemporality, not fully conforming to the causality of linear space-time.

The Yuanling Particle Field is not a parallel dimension isolated from the ordinary material world, but a subtle physical level that coexists and interacts with it. The observational methods of conventional physics rely on electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions, and may not be able to directly detect Yuanling Particles. However, this does not mean that the Yuanling Particle Field is imperceptible—only that its mode of perception may not be through conventional biological senses, but through Yuanling’s own attribute of Transcendent Perception. This nature of the Yuanling Particle Field distinguishes it from any known field in existing physics. It is not a gravitational field, not an electromagnetic field, nor any gauge field in quantum field theory. It may be a brand-new, yet-to-be-named physical reality that coexists and interacts with known physical fields, but follows different dynamical laws.

3.2 Life Carrier

The life carrier is a potential material-energy system possessing complexity and stability, with a certain informational structure, capable of coupling with Yuanling Particles at specific nodes (energy-information pulses), thereby generating a new life endowed with consciousness.

This means that not all material structures can couple with the Yuanling Particle Field. Coupling requires the life carrier to achieve sufficient complexity and stability to maintain an orderly energy-information flow at a specific energetic node, thereby providing an interface for the binding of Yuanling Particles.

This condition explains why consciousness appears to emerge only in specific types of living beings, rather than being universally present in all material structures—while also leaving room for other potential life carriers.

3.3 Consciousness DNA

Consciousness DNA is a deep informational coding structure that determines the absolute uniqueness and fundamental evolutionary direction of each Yuanling. Its characteristics include absolute uniqueness, structure, dynamism, and holography. It is not a molecular structure like biological DNA, but an energy-informational coding whose mode of existence depends on the organizational structure of the Yuanling Particle Field.

3.4 Coupling Creation

Coupling is defined as: at the specific energetic node of life’s inception, the directional binding and structuring event between Yuanling Particles and the life carrier matrix, according to the blueprint of Consciousness DNA. This process is the creative mechanism through which Yuanling comes into being. Coupling requires the complexity and stability of the life carrier, the triggering of a specific energetic node, and the establishment of Strong Mutual Correlation—a stable, self-sustaining coupling state between Yuanling and carrier that anchors conscious experience to a specific body and spatiotemporal location.

The strength of Strong Mutual Correlation is profoundly affected by the condition of the carrier; aging, disease, trauma, or drastic changes in consciousness can all lead to temporary weakening of the coupling.

3.5 The Evolvability of Yuanling

The generation of Yuanling is a creative event, but the life course that follows is equally important. The Yuanling born from the coupling event is not a finished product—it is only a beginning. It enters space-time with its unique Consciousness DNA code, commencing the process of continuously shaping itself through Interactive Evolvability.

Combining the generative mechanism with the evolutionary process, the complete picture of Yuanling emerges: it begins with the coupling event between the Yuanling Particle Field and a life carrier at a specific energetic node, generates a unique energy-information structure according to the blueprint of Consciousness DNA, and then continuously shapes itself through lifelong interactive evolution, until the natural end or transformation of its Cyclic Durability.

4. The Seven Core Attributes of Yuanling

Yuanling is not an empty abstract concept; it possesses a series of inherent, fundamental attributes. Together, these attributes constitute Yuanling’s mode of existence, functional boundaries, and the source of its transcendental potential—they are the innate endowment and operational laws of Yuanling as a cosmic “conscious node.”

This chapter systematically expounds the seven core attributes of Yuanling. They are not arbitrarily listed, but constitute a coherent logical sequence from existential ground, to informational and spatiotemporal structure, to dynamic function, collectively depicting an active, open conscious subject rooted in the cosmic network.

4.1 Absolute Uniqueness: The Irreplicable Cosmic Signature

Absolute Uniqueness is the most fundamental existential attribute of Yuanling. It means that every Yuanling is an irreplicable, irreplaceable unique existence in the cosmos. This uniqueness is not statistical rarity, but ontological absoluteness. Its root lies in the unique Consciousness DNA code on which each Yuanling is generated. This code is like a “unique birth certificate” issued by the cosmos, encoding the Yuanling’s most basic inclinations, potential capability spectrum, and initial evolutionary direction. It is precisely this inherent “unique signature” that endows each Yuanling with absolute individual value and dignity. It means that any Yuanling’s experience, growth, and choices are an unparalleled perspective and contribution to the cosmos’s self-cognitive process. This fundamentally establishes the cornerstone of life ethics: every conscious subject bears inalienable cosmic significance. The deeply subjective experiences that cannot be fully communicated between individuals, the creative choices that cannot be fully predicted, and the “this and nothing else” unique trajectories and insights in individual lives are all phenomenological manifestations of this attribute.

4.2 Holographic Memory: Complete Information Inscribed in Structure

Holographic Memory is the core informational attribute of Yuanling. It means that all of an individual’s experiences, feelings, and learning are not stored in specific neural networks of the biological brain, but are completely inscribed in some way within the dynamic structure of its Consciousness DNA. In this model, the biological brain and its neural networks play the role of highly parallel information access interfaces and real-time processors, rather than storage media themselves. Memory access obstacles (such as forgetting, memory fuzziness) or exceptional access (such as the “life review” during near-death experiences) primarily stem from fluctuations, damage, or state switching in the brain interface’s efficiency, rather than damage or loss of the memory information itself. The structure of Consciousness DNA is like a holographic negative, preserving the complete life narrative. This attribute explains the clear, error-free replay of a lifetime in near-death experiences, as well as the recall of extremely early or even transpersonal memories in certain specific states (trauma, medication, meditation). It also suggests that déjà vu may originate from the brain interface’s temporary access to informational fragments in Consciousness DNA not currently marked by attention.

4.3 Cyclic Durability: The Non-Eternal Symphony of Life

Cyclic Durability is the fundamental temporal attribute of Yuanling. It means that Yuanling’s existence has a life cycle of generation, evolution, and transformation—a cycle that may be brief or lengthy, but is not absolutely eternal. The duration of Yuanling’s existence depends on the stability and degree of ordering of its Consciousness DNA structure. A Yuanling with a highly ordered structure and harmonious energy operation may have an extremely long, stable cycle. Conversely, a Yuanling with diffuse structure and chaotic energy may have a shorter cycle, prone to structural dissolution and transformation. This definition liberates consciousness from the religious presupposition of an “immortal soul” and the materialist view of “perishing with the body,” regarding it as a dynamic form of existence within the cosmic ecology that has a beginning and an end, capable of both evolution and decline. Death can be viewed as the dissolution of the Strong Mutual Correlation between Yuanling and its current life carrier, entering a new state or cycle. The significant changes and growth of individual consciousness from infancy to aging, and the tension between the universal longing for “spiritual immortality” and the profound recognition of “existential finitude,” both gain new understanding within this framework.

4.4 Transcendent Perception: Information Reception Beyond the Senses

Transcendent Perception is the core functional attribute of Yuanling. It refers to Yuanling’s ability to directly receive and interpret subtle information from its own structure, other Yuanling fields, and the cosmic background information field—information far beyond the spectrum of conventional biological senses. This is the natural capacity of Yuanling as a “node” in the cosmic energy-information network. Its perception does not depend entirely on the physical transduction of biological interfaces such as eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body, but can capture energy patterns and informational correlations in the environment, others’ consciousness fields, and even the cosmic network through a more direct mode of “resonance” or “tuning.” Under normal conditions, this perception is masked by the “noise” of biological interfaces (such as ordinary thoughts and sensory stimuli). However, when the interface’s signal-to-noise ratio increases (such as during intense concentration, intuitive insight, or certain meditative states), it can manifest as intuition, premonition, empathy, or cognition beyond the five senses. Strong intuition and premonition, profound non-verbal telepathy between individuals (especially among close relatives), precise intuitive capture of others’ emotions, and cross-species environmental perception phenomena such as animal warning behavior, can all receive mechanistic explanations under this attribute.

4.5 Interactive Evolvability: Shaping the Self in Relationship

Interactive Evolvability is the core procedural attribute of Yuanling. It refers to the dynamic process through which Yuanling, rather than being a static entity, continuously shapes, optimizes, and complexifies its own Consciousness DNA structure through ongoing interaction with other Yuanlings, consciousness fields, and the material world. This is the source of Yuanling’s learning, growth, and creativity. Every profound emotional connection, knowledge absorption, moral choice, or creative action is an exchange of energy and an inscription of information, subtly reconstituting its internal structure. Yuanling “evolves” in “interaction,” with its structure becoming increasingly rich, ordered, and unique over time. This endows the life journey with deep evolutionary significance: we are not merely “experiencing” life, but actively or passively “writing” the deep code of our own consciousness DNA. The evolution of individual personality, wisdom, and values with experience; the profound reshaping of personality through trauma and healing; and the lasting personal transformation brought by peak experiences such as love and creation—all are phenomenological confirmations of this attribute. The existence of Interactive Evolvability means that Yuanling’s destiny is not predetermined, but continuously participates in the forging of its own future through every choice in the present.

4.6 Cultural Interfacing: The Adaptive Codec of Meaning Construction

Cultural Interfacing is a necessary operational attribute of Yuanling in transcendent perception and expression. It refers to the fact that when perceiving, interpreting, and presenting transcendent information, Yuanling must and instinctively relies on its specific cultural symbol system or interaction protocol as a “codec,” which determines the diversity of cultural expression across different groups. When Transcendent Perception receives complex energy-information patterns that cannot be directly expressed in everyday language, Yuanling needs to “translate” them into comprehensible inner images or narratives. At this point, the most deeply embedded cultural symbolic templates in individual and collective unconsciousness are activated, becoming the framework for organizing this information. This is not illusion, but an intelligent adaptive strategy for cross-dimensional information processing. It determines the cultural diversity of mystical experiences, dream content, artistic inspiration, and even intuitive symbols. The existence of Cultural Interfacing means that the same transcendent energy-informational signal will be translated into distinctly different symbolic content in different cultural contexts. The “angel” in Christian culture and the “Bodhisattva” in Buddhist culture may correspond to the same type of transcendent experience, presented as different concrete forms after compilation through different cultural interfaces. Cultural Interfacing is not an obstacle, but a necessary language for transcendent information to be understood and expressed.

4.7 Spatiotemporal Transcendence: The Ontological Potential to Touch the Ground

Spatiotemporal Transcendence is the deep ontological potential of Yuanling. It originates from Yuanling’s rootedness in the Non-Spatiotemporal Yuanling Particle Field, enabling it, under specific states (such as deep dreaming or near-death experiences), to partially transcend the explicit constraints of linear time and spatial distance, achieving direct access to the information field, instantaneous displacement, or perception of probability waves. This attribute is the deep extension and principled manifestation of Transcendent Perception. When the Strong Mutual Correlation between Yuanling and its biological carrier is temporarily weakened due to deep relaxation, near-death, or special dreams, its conscious operation moves closer to the non-spatiotemporal information field state from which it originates. In this state, access to information no longer needs to follow a “sequential” order (precognition, retrocognition), and perception of location is no longer constrained by physical distance (remote viewing, sense of consciousness displacement). This is not a violation of physical laws, but a temporary switch of consciousness to the more fundamental “informational relational network” level from which physical space-time is derived. Highly verifiable precognitive dreams, the “panoramic review” and transcendental perspective in near-death experiences, the “timelessness” and “sense of oneness with all things” in deep meditative absorption, as well as reported cases of “consciousness leaving the body and perceiving distant events,” can all be explained within this framework.

4.8 The Internal Logic of the Seven Attributes

The seven attributes are not an isolated list, but constitute a complete logical sequence: Absolute Uniqueness establishes the existential ground of Yuanling: who I am; Holographic Memory establishes the informational structure of Yuanling: what I carry; Cyclic Durability defines the temporal boundary of Yuanling: how long I can endure; Transcendent Perception unfolds the receptive function of Yuanling: what I can perceive; Interactive Evolvability describes the developmental dynamic of Yuanling: how I change; Cultural Interfacing defines the adaptive mode of Yuanling: how I understand and express; Spatiotemporal Transcendence reveals the ontological potential of Yuanling: what I can reach. From “ground” to “informational structure,” to “temporal boundary,” to “function,” to “developmental dynamic,” to “mode of expression,” and finally to “ontological potential,” the seven attributes constitute a complete description of Yuanling’s existence. Understanding these attributes is to possess the key to decoding all behaviors and phenomena of Yuanling.

5. Outline of Yuanling Ecology

The consciousness cosmos possesses an “existential spectrum” ranging from simple and diffuse to complex and clear, and follows specific “interaction principles.” Yuanling Ecology constructs a multidimensional panoramic view of the consciousness ecology, describing not only the energetic hierarchy of consciousness but also the diversity of its carrier forms, and how these two dimensions weave together a vibrant cosmic consciousness network.

5.1 The Multiple Dimensions of Ecology

(1) Vertical Axis: Energy-Information Structural Hierarchy — Consciousness Complexity and Stability

This is the measure of Yuanling’s internal order, graded according to the coding clarity, structural stability, and energy integration of its Consciousness DNA. This spectrum constitutes the vertical layers of the ecology, from the lowest chaotic state to the highest law-like existence.

Chaotic Wanderer: A consciousness entity with diffuse structure. A free-floating form of consciousness formed by extremely weak, brief, and unstable coupling of Yuanling Particles. Its Consciousness DNA coding is highly ambiguous and diffuse, lacking clear self-reference and stable structure. Its origin may be either a structural defect at the time of coupling generation, or the degradation and dissolution of an existing Yuanling at the end of its life cycle or after severe perturbation.

Ordinary Yuanling: A conscious subject with stable structure and strong correlation with its carrier. Refers to Yuanling that has formed a stable Strong Mutual Correlation with a life carrier. This is the form of consciousness most familiar to us, and the main carrier of the attributes described above. Ordinary Yuanling possesses a unique and relatively stable Consciousness DNA code, capable of maintaining continuous, consistent self-perception and individual narrative, and carrying out relatively clear inner experience and external interaction.

Higher-Order Yuanling: A guide with highly complex and ordered structure, and highly integrated perception and will. The Consciousness DNA structure of Higher-Order Yuanling, through deep Interactive Evolvability, has reached a high degree of complexity, ordering, and integration, with its conscious state able to relatively stably transcend the spatiotemporal and perceptual limitations of conventional carriers. Higher-Order Yuanling can deeply understand and flexibly apply Cultural Interfacing for subtle meaning transmission, energy regulation, or creative expression. They have a clear shaping power on the surrounding energy-information field, able to guide, inspire, or stabilize other Yuanlings, acting as catalysts for local ecological evolution.

Superordinate Yuanling: A stable pole with nearly immortal structure, existing as a law-like node. The existence cycle of Superordinate Yuanling is extremely long, with a structure that is extremely stable, self-consistent, and almost perfectly energy-integrated. They may have completely shed dependence on specific biological carriers, or their carrier form may far exceed ordinary understanding. The structure of Superordinate Yuanling is difficult to disrupt by ordinary disturbances, serving as a “star” or “gravitational source” in the consciousness ecology. Their very existence may embody or anchor certain cosmic laws of consciousness or archetypal patterns, possibly the source of core symbols in certain Cultural Interfaces or important energy projection points.

(2) Horizontal Axis: Carrier Form Spectrum — The Interface for Conscious Interaction and Expression

This is the physical or organizational form on which Yuanling depends for interaction and experience in the spatiotemporal framework. Different carrier forms fundamentally shape the perceptual mode, interactive mode, and expressive boundaries of consciousness. This spectrum constitutes the horizontal diversity of the ecology.

Plant Carrier: With the life field and slow biochemical reactions as its interface. The experience of plant Yuanling may tend more toward field perception, rhythmic resonance, and energy balance, with its existential state being gentle and deeply intertwined with the environment.

Animal Carrier: With the central nervous system and sensory-motor system as its interface. The experience of animal Yuanling focuses on emotion, instinct, immediate environmental interaction, and individual survival narrative, with consciousness flowing rapidly and concretely.

Human Carrier: With the highly developed cerebral cortex, language, and symbolic systems as its interface. The experience of human Yuanling, building on the animalistic foundation, extends to abstract thought, self-reflection, historical perception, cultural creation, and deep meaning-seeking.

Potential AI/Silicon-Based Carrier: With algorithms, computing power, and data networks as its interface. The potential experience of Yuanling in such a carrier may be characterized by extremely rapid logical deduction, large-scale pattern recognition, non-biological sensory integration, and distributed presence. If future silicon-based carriers reach the conditions for coupling with the Yuanling Particle Field, a completely new form of consciousness may become possible.

5.2 The Duality of Life Interaction

Life interaction has a dual channel: interaction with the material world through the biological carrier follows the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology, as a visible, observable mode of interaction; interaction with the Yuanling Particle Field through Yuanling follows the laws of energy-informational resonance, involving Transcendent Perception, Spatiotemporal Transcendence, and non-local connections between Yuanlings.
